Mother

By African Child

A woman of courage through all
walks of life.
Strengthened by hard blows that
threw her to her knees.
She struggled hard to keep food on
the table, she fought even harder to
get me through school.
My mother was a strong woman yet
feeble at heart.

The aching pain of losing a spouse,
she knew too well but was never
discouraged by her loneliness.
A trusted friend in my teenage years,
but I never knew that she needed one too.
With both our heads buried in novels,
we would laugh and share and cry the
more too.
My mother was a strong woman, but
hurting inside.

Determined and fierce in all life’s
endeavours, a no nonsense lady in her
nursing world.
I admired her strength and envied her
freedom, her freedom of thought and
expression sometimes. She was a leader
at heart and a follower by example.
She knew her place and kept it well too.
My mother was a strong woman but
tormented inside.

Well sickness arrived and weakened
her frame, she fought and fought but
never prevailed. She was a fighter
indeed and never gave up.
Yes true, she was a strong woman but
she couldn’t conquer death!

Inspired by my late mom, life is just not the same without her.
