Ode to My Mother

The more she seeks to be normal
The farther she moves from the status quo.
She likes babies and the noises they make
and how they smile, and their sudden, jerky movements,
But she doesn’t want one of her own.
She doesn’t want the responsibility.
And many would have her believe that she is a terrible person.
Mama you tell her to have one.
That’s how she would learn.
But mama you failed to raise her and teach her
and caress her and protect her and assure her
that she is worth it. And now you want this
strange 29 year old child to raise another child
because that should teach her?
A soothsayer once told her that maybe Mama you never wanted her.
It somehow feels right and true that it should be so.
Maybe Mama, you wished a different life for yourself
and she forced you to live this one instead.
Mama I know you are unhappy.
You say no one loves you, but who do You love?
