Night bird

In a mossy bed she lies awake, watching the deep night sky.
If alone, she’s far from home, no one to hear her cry.

Afraid to move she tries to speak, wishing she was heard.
Then a sound flung from the ground; a ringing singing bird!

“Why do you sing?” She asks the bird: “For it is evening still,
The trees move slow to the winds that blow on this dark and grassy hill.”

“Why should I stop?” Replied the bird, “because the sun is gone?”
“Shall I wait for the light and the passing of night, and sing at the crack of dawn?

”For if I sing when all is well, and cheery, and happy and free;
What shall we do when darkness breaks through, tell me what use would I be?"

"So I believe when darkened sorrows spread from coast to coast,
It is then, my friend, as evening ends,
when we need songs the most.
