Lemonade

Handlebar heartbeat
So sweet—my candle star—
Keep me so damn far under par
For thunder starts
Deep in the bloodflow
Of my savage child heart;
You managed to part the seas
To the stranger within me—
I can’t seem to see though
Past the berry blue film
Of my own shadow,
Though I won’t stop to throw
Back the flow of the cherry tar road
All I need to know is how to let you go;
And watermelon seeds will never grow
Under a layer of heartbroken
Sleet and snow—activate the yes
Forget the no—we’re building a nest
Out of lemonade and laughter,
The mast of this sinking sailboat
Inhales the bent strawberry sounds
And won’t stop singing
As long as frowns are looked down upon
Come on and hold my hand;
Will I land on two feet?
Or will I meet your sweet grapefruit lips
And keep you close to me?
In your warm embrace, a grip
Of dripping peaches and plums,
I’ll run to you always saying softly
           —Baby, I’m home.
