Stages of Pain

Preview to a book of poetry

The first stage, I know all too well, much like the rest.
It’s the part that plays every emotion and puts every ounce
of your being to the test.
The feelings of losing yourself, and your control, and being
completely wiped clean of everything you need.
The second stage is as much of a dirty job indeed.
It begins with the constant questions of whether or not
you did everything right. Did you put up a good enough
fight? Did you do everything that could have been done?
Has the heartache and pain finally won?
The third stage is when the real truth comes in.
The fighter starts to surface and the healing can now
begin. The desire to take a step forward in either
direction finds its comfort and moves in.
The next stage (never final) is the Will and the strength
to survive. Your journey to make your imprints becomes
more than touching with your hands and seeing with your
eyes.
You’re left with scars, and your fight for life becomes real.
It begins to show you, your own strength, and now you can
grab hold of the wheel.
Where pain once was now lays hope and faith.
It’s a point of no longer having anything to lose,
and everything to gain.
