His shackles

His past held him like shackles,
his pain chained him in fear,
he was weighed down by the pain of his past–
It had been such a long year.

He did not yet understand,
the effect of their lies,
that he would one day sit wondering,
what had become of his life.

Days and days passed,
and he had a smile on his face,
he thought if he ignored the problem,
maybe it would go away.

He had tried at forgiveness,
to let go of the past,
but that only left him questioning,
if anything could last.

He tried to appease her,
but she was so confused,
and despite all her efforts,
he was left feeling used.

He couldn’t help feeling broken,
what she was doing was wrong,
and he couldn’t help but wonder,
if she was lying all along.

His chains seemed to multiply,
growing heavier, weighing him down,
and as he dug at the wall for an escape,
he sunk lower to the ground.

She tore at his shackles,
fought the chains that bound him,
trying to break him free from the lies,
that he had locked his heart in.

They were left bloodied from their efforts,
with the weight still clinging on,
pushing them down lower,
they were tired of being strong.

They were exhausted from the fight,
she stopped ripping at his chains,
and though most were broken,
still a few remained.

And after this long battle,
there was much damage done,
not yet to freedom,
not a victory won.

So she picked up his chains,
and held them close to her chest,
because if they shared their weight,
They could finally be at rest.
