Warmth

Good Morning!
How are you today?
The trees knock against the house.
I’m lovely, how are you? They say.
What a beautiful day.
The grass is starting to grow back.
The ice has finally thawed.
Water trickles down the pavement like a river of salt and spring.
Summer is coming.
The leaves dance in the sunlight.
A cool breeze wraps around my face.
The world is alive again.
Flowers begin the peak their heads out.
The outside doesn’t look so dead anymore.
My insides begin to squirm.
Darkness filled my vision for so long.
This winter was not kind.
Inspiration comes back to my mind.
It’s an unfamiliar inspiration.
The kind that makes the corners of your mouth turn up.
The kind that makes your eyes squint.
I bite my lip from excitement and curiosity.
Blood starts to seep onto my tongue.
I am reminded of the hole in my chest.
It tastes like iron.
Steel has infected my veins.
Too much abuse from this winter.
I shiver.
The trees shiver with me.
The sun holds my face.
It’s okay, it says, everything will be alright.
Warmth.
My body feels warm for the first time.
I look towards the sky.
Not a cloud in sight.
I smile.
The darkness is finally gone.
