A Fate Worse Than Death (part 1)

Sit listening to them scream
Back and forth, back and forth
Across the room I see her
Sitting beside herself in tears
Hands clenched over her ears
Trying her best to block out their screams
They don’t notice her pain

Storming into the room
I yell at my parents
“Can’t you see the damage
You’ve instilled in her mind”
Walking back I comfort her
It will all be okay later.
I promise. I promise

The only thing that comes to mind
Her mind needs to be elsewhere
The only thing I can do now
Is get her away from this; from them.
“I have a surprise”
We walk outside to the car
Their screams filling the peaceful air

I look at her and she’s silent
I wish she could know the truth
She’s not really my blood sister
But they don’t care to tell the truth
Her beautiful dark complexion
Contrasts with my pale face
She, brown-eyed and haired
Doesn’t expect a thing
Of her blue-eyed blonde sister

We pull up to the ice cream shop
She can’t seem to hold still.
I ask her if she’s happy
She answers very much so
A hug lands in my arms
And we walk in silence
Trying not to remember why we’re here

Standing surrounded by people
It suddenly gets dark
A deep voice chimes through the chatter around us
“Guess who”
He knows why we’re here
He can see the truth in my eyes
I can’t hide the truth from him

A tear touches my cheek
As I fall into his embrace
The only thing that could bring me back
Was a tug on my jacket
From a slightly impatient girl
I snap back and remember where we are.
Remembering she’s there amidst the crowd

We get to the table in the corner
With Jacob by my side
I began to think more than I should
He was the football team’s captain
How could I compare?
He’s somehow always there for me,
A clarinet in the school’s band.
We were as opposite as you could get.

She went to play; to forget the world
I wish I could do the same
But I have him. My best friend
“I don’t know” I tell him
Staring into his eyes
I could sit there forever
Until I heard it. They all screamed
Gunshots rang through the building
CRACK. CRACK.
