The Gentleman

He approaches, with all the airs
of good social graces
Head held high and the manners
of respectful breeding.
It’s taken one look
and already a smile curves my lips
How quickly his plans succeed
and I fall under his spell.

A firm handshake with Dad,
outright flattery to my blushing Mother.
A little peck for the little trouble
and a coquettish smile just for me.
He’s found a place in my family’s good books,
straight to the top!
The scheming, tall, dark stranger
finds this game too elementary.

I’ll show him that though my parents
may be child’s play,
I’m too stubborn to surrender
without a fight.
I won’t back down and allow myself
to slip into his green eyes.
Even when he takes my hand–
I dismiss that flutter of butterflies.

His large, warm hand settles perfectly
into the small of my back.
His unyielding gaze never strays
from my eyes.
I say something about the music,
he laughs.
The sound reverberates through my body
as my mind plays it over and over.

I continue to stand strong
through the next three songs.
Yet, as the music dies down on the third,
I feel my walls begin to crumble.
Slowly, and with confidence,
he leads me to the terrace doors.
The night is cool
and the starts shine bright.

I would like to say that I stood strong
and never let his plan thrive.
Truth be told, the game was won
when his lips met mine.
