Farewell

In the summer month of June
I bid my heart farewell
To take into your keeping
to love and treat it well
With my fragile wrists, my dear
I tore my chest right wide
I don’t know why I trusted
You didn’t look me in the eye
And when the leaves began to descend, my love
In the calm dawn of fall
To you I drew closer
Your gentle laugh became my all
Had I known then what I know now
Not a doubt crosses my mind
I’d still bind myself to you
Still long to call you mine
In the welcome embrace of winter, my darling
When the trees wither and die
I embraced the pit of darkness
Tracing a delicate crimson line
Now i’m waiting for the spring, my sun-and-stars
For my empty chest to thaw
Thinking maybe hope will blossom again
Avoiding misery’s call
