The Fable of the Little Bluebird

A Moral Lesson for Our Times

Once there was a little bluebird happily flitting about his nest, chirping and singing his little bluebird song.  One day he  decided that it was finally  time to fly away and see the world.  So he hopped up on the edge of the nest, flapped his little wings, and took off.  Straight down to the ground far below he plunged, landing with a thunk.  As he lay there in his agony, hurting from beak to tail, what did he see coming straight at him but a very large horse.  This is it, the little bird thought.  But the stride of a horse is very long and he was a tiny bird and so the hoofs of the beast never even came close.  It did, however, as such animals are known to do, eject the remains of yesterdays forage as it passed overhead, such excrement landing squarely on top of our little friend. This is certainly the end he thought but then a strange thing happened.  It seems that fresh manure is very warm and this application of heat had a very therapuetic effect and soon he was feeling much better and popped his little head up out of the crap and began to sing, being so happy to survive all of this great misadventure.  A passing cat heard the singing and came and pulled him out, wiped him off, and ate him.  There are three morals to this story.   First, not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.  Second, not everyone who pulls you out is your friend.  Third and most important, when it gets really deep keep your head down and your mouth shut.
