Exposed Among the Oak

Dreams dead.
Hopes burned to shreds.
Reality hit by a lightning bolt.
Perceptions of an identity lost,
Ego in revolt.

Exposed. Vulnerable.
But without the courage
to embrace imperfection.
Still limited by past perception
of a Lost Cause,
Worthless,
Shameful,
unable to deal with loss
of family
of love
of innocence.
Soul-shattering experience
time and time again
for years.
Brain addicted to the fear.
Depression becomes a coping mechanism.
Comfort found in disassociation.
“I don’t want to be a part of this world.”
Says the scared little girl,
the frightened young boy
who’d rather die than be deprived of joy.
The child trapped by circumstance;
enveloped by the suffering paired with
situational awareness
of injustice, non-consent, lack of compassion...

Dreams dead.
Hopes burned to shreds.
Creating the ashes from which to rise,
a reality like that of the oak
who’s prone to lightning strikes.
The tree is not dead,
but merely decorated
with the scars of survival.

So keep on Child.
Exposed to the wild.
Naked. Vulnerable. Home.
With the strength of an oak.
