Mutual Impact

Walked into a coffee shop to read a book,
couldn’t help but notice the older woman
in the corner counting dirty change
with a smile on her face.

She looked up at me,
“Whatya reading?” she asked.
I started to casually answer the question
and quickly realized this beautiful opportunity
for human connection.

A brief description of 'Into the Wild’
led to a conversation about human values.
How the “civilized” won’t look the house-less in the eyes.
How food, shelter, and love are human rights.
How the majority of Americans are too busy collecting money
to experience the richness of compassion.
How sad the culture of rugged individualism & selfish pursuits is.
How horrific to observe and experience the continuation of violence
followed by justification for such actions
by those conditioned with ignorance.

"I’ve been living on the streets since 1972,
and travel around on grey hounds too.
If I wrote a book it would be called,
‘Escaping Reality,’ cause that’s what I’ve done for so long.
But now my body can’t take it
and my mind is so much clearer.
I’ve gone from hopelessly blind,
to waking up excited, cause I’m a seer.
And those people who hurt children,
they’ll get what’s coming.
You can’t hurt a child
without causing your own suffering."

Tears overwhelmed her eyes,
so I took her hand in mine.
“It’s so sad, it’s just so sad.”
The words uttered forth
but her heart knew more.
Our eyes met each other in that instant,
souls no longer distant,
And I replied:
“Yes, but here we are, we survived.”

Smiles swept across our faces,
a truth shared by so many
and recognized by the few
willing to empty themselves of hatred
and continue to love cause it’s all we can do.
