I Don’t Know

I stroll along the seaside in my mind
And watch the repetitious waves, rise and decline,
I know their crashing sounds can soothe a raging soul.
Why?— I don’t know, I don’t know.

I watch the graceful gulls cut the sky
I would love to be there with them
If growing wings would let me try.
I feel my spirit rise, and I sigh.

A Sandpiper dances at the shore
Seeking daily treasures from the sand.
He’s hopeful and determined at his core.
Will he find empty shells, or something more?

I’ve conjured up a dog on my beach
The happy mutt is chasing shadows on the waves.
He’s having fun, I do declare. I wish that I was there
Instead of watching shadows in these caves.

Yes, I stroll along the seaside, in my mind
Then I watch the movement of the waves, for a time.
Those sounds have often calmed this raging soul.
Why?— I don’t know, I still don’t know.
