The Homeless Man in Pale Blue (Short Story)

True story..

He stunk of old stale cigarettes and was nearly bald. He weighed no more than 120 pounds, was somewhere in his early fifties, and had noticeable stubble of gray hair along his jawline. His voice was a little raspy but yet soft and of silk. His pale blue t-shirt was stained with dirt here and there along with his faded worn black shorts. He was a familiar face to those around him; I noticed others greeted him with open arms. I was standing over by a corner and meditated, though, still aware of my surroundings. As a woman crooned, I felt his eyes examining me. I felt I should feel concerned that this stranger kept his eyes locked on me, but I didn’t feel alarmed. I wasn’t fearful. But, a wave of peace washed over me as I meditated. I could see nor hear anyone around me, except for the homeless man with the pale blue shirt. As I stepped out of my trance, he walked over to me and said “Excuse me miss, but I couldn’t help but notice you standing over in the corner there.” His beautiful big brown eyes willed me to trust him. They were so honest and kind. Though his eyes looked very weary and worn, they carried a soft humbleness. I held his eyes and smiled a kind smile, unsure of what to say. His hand covered his heart as he said “You’ve inspired me. As I watched you meditate, I saw your strength, peace and all the fight that you have left. You are a warrior and I admire that about you.” I wondered how a person like me could inspire anyone for that matter. And as if reading my mind, he responded. “You’ve inspired me to survive... To continue to fight.” He then smiled at me and parted . I stood there paralyzed, unable to comprehend what had just happened. No one seemed to notice my encounter with the homeless man, so I finally walked outside to where he had gone, but he was nowhere to be found. It was as if he disappeared into thin air, or if he was just a figment of my imagination. He was gone. The homeless man in the pale blue shirt effortlessly blended into the night.
