The Dog Days

Rolling meadows stretch into the skyline
 
Treetops glow in myriad shades of green
 
Flowers bloom brightly in the sunshine
 
In rainbow colors; what a perfect scene!
 
But the mercury is rising, an ominous sign
 
Pleasant days will soon be over and unseen
 
Dog days are coming, even if we whine
 
Hot, sultry weather; and lots of sunscreen!

The fifth in the series of poems about spring. In this case, the death of spring!

Dog days - the sultry part of the summer, supposed to occur during the period that Sirius, the Dog Star, rises at the same time as the sun: now often reckoned from July 3 to August 11. It is a period marked by lethargy, inactivity, or indolence.
