Growing up brown

ODE TO INNOCENCE

I was a little girl once.
With hands that never held,
Hearts that bled all over my crisp white dress.

I was a little lamb once.
With hooves that have never splashed,
In hell’s muddy puddled shores.

I am a moth now.
Still drawn to the light and the flame,
That I may burn this dark coat off  of me and be a butterfly.
