Gray Girl

Little gray girl with lips of blue
Empty eyes vacant to the world around
Rain falls from your lashes and still, a stationary gaze
You died with your sweet simplistic smile
Gliding through long grass and forgotten headstones
Finding the one with our name
Carrying your body to the rigid grave
Chipped polish sparkles from your muddy toes
Bitter spring wind cuts through our cotton nightgowns
Wrapped in our silky white blanket
There we stay as dark April rain falls
Sweet gray girl with lips of blue
Innocence ravaged to the marrow within
Covered with betraying soil and poisonous fumes
A bed of pinless grenades and gasoline
The cold dirt covers us as I clench tight to your lifeless spirit
Stripped eyes, we set sail on a starless night of sorrow
We lay to rest teddy bears and belly laughs, color books and restful dreams
Goodbye sweet girl with golden hair and eyes of the sea
You rest within my arms as we surrender to what’s beneath

At some point in every person's life, we in a sense, bury our younger selves. Our childish eyes are awakened for the first time. Whether it was a beautiful way of passage or it was stripped and exposed, without warning. At some point in our lives, we grieve the little girl or little boy in us. The innocence, smiles, laugh and way of life.
