THE ODE TO ALICE

To my wife, Patricia

THE ODE TO ALICE

The town of Hiawatha, is known quite well by all
Beautiful maple trees show their color in the fall
In town there is a family, of whom the whole town boasts
It was the church going family of Frank and Mary Coast

Billy was the eldest son, an athlete of renown
Little brother Robert always followed him around
Next door to them lived Alice, a girl so fine and rare
Wherever Alice went, the boys would be right there

They grew up together, and so the townsfolk said
Billy and sweet Alice were destined to be wed
He the king and she the queen of the senior prom
But Billy had a secret that would upset the calm

Billy was a patriot, he signed up for the war
Alice said she would wait, though the years be four
Robert had a feeling that Bill would not be back
They hugged and Bill took off for the country of Iraq

Then suddenly it happened the thing she feared the most
For coming up the driveway was Frank and Mary Coast
Billy died a hero was all they had to say
Alice couldn’t tell them ‘bout the baby on the way

That night she called Robert, her secret she exposed
Robert fell to his knees, and quickly he proposed
Gossip spread like wildfire, from pillar then to post
Scorn came from the townsfolk for the family Coast

The ladies held a meeting; they could not let this go
They wanted to ask Alice, why she acted so
When Alice started talking, they turned white as a ghost
She told them when I make love; I go from Coast to Coast.

The town gossips should not assume something they don't know.
