Kryptonite

Unremarkable. A dull green rock
Its embers do not pulse, but glow
Not bright, like the stars; but deep, like the sun
An older sun, a tired sun, Krypton’s Son
Kal-El

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?
A blur of colours– red, white and blue
Racing across the luminous sky
Playing catch-up with the Man Himself
Who soars– what a sight!

But even gods have their weakness,
Achilles had his heel
Enough to make this dull green rock
A diamond in the rough

This substance that, to you and me,
Does no more harm than ordinary
Would to Him cause pain beyond measure
While villains watch and take their pleasure

But outward hate masks inward love
One cannot live without the other
Unstoppable force meets immovable object
Locked in an eternal struggle
Victory is sweet when mingled with defeat
And life worthwhile through struggles, hardship and trial.
