The Alcoholic

I almost stopped, it’s true my friend,
My drinking days were at and end,
I vowed to stop, to play it cool,
To be a man and not a fool,
So this glass I have before me now,
Shall be my last on that I vow,
I’ll show then all that I can stop,
And never drink another drop.

The glass I raised towards my lips,
And drank, with pleasure, in little sips,
Letting the spirit slowly flow,
'Till I felt my body begin to glow,
I closed my eyes in sheer delight,
For my world again was clear and bright,
But ere a moment had leave to pass,
My eyes beheld an empty glass.

“Another drink?” The barman asked,
“No” I said, “that was my last.”
“Man” he said, “I’m really proud,
To hear you say those words out loud.”
He took my glass and raised it high,
I saw a drop, it wasn’t dry,
“Oh to hell” I stoutly said,
“I’ll stop tomorrow night instead.”
