One Last Try

I didn’t set out to hurt you, I want you to know right now.
I’ll probably always love you anyhow.
You said that you’d never leave me and let’s give it one more try.
Then in the space of one weekend you said goodbye.
I know you’ve got someone else now,
I know he is your ideal man.
I hope he doesn’t hurt you like I did,
But nobody knows the truth like I’m feeling it deep inside,
I would have made it work, this one last try.

I’m not quite sure how I’m feeling when I think of you each day,
And if our contacts eye to eye we look away.
Whenever I chance to meet you, like when you are passing by,
You always hug me  at goodbye and make me cry.
I just couldn’t bear to lose you anymore than I have, it tears me up to think of walls built high.
I can’t tell you that I need you, don’t want you to see me cry,
Don’t want to lose the chance of one last try.

Promises unkept and words misused.
Feelings drawn deeply from springs that rarely see the light of day.
Pain is here and pain will dog my weary steps,
Until the sunrise, rising through the ragged clouds,
Leads us to the silver sands where we can be free.

So I’ll carry on to see you though I’m falling apart inside.
And when the pain becomes too much I’ll run and hide.
Each time you say you’re happy and in love with your new man,
I’ll look into your eyes and smile like I know I can.
And you will not sense me waiting,
I know that just wouldn’t do.
I’ll walk with you as best friend by your side.
And if your love falls apart and you’re needing a place to cry,
Maybe we’ll get our chance for one last try.
