Blossom

Blossom blew off the tree
And there goes life I thought
As I walked my dog and he limped along
And tried to muster a small shower
At every lamp post and tree
For the most part he managed it
As I bent down with a plastic bag
I realised that somehow
I was never tired of dealing with your shit
Because I loved you as I love him with
Unconditional love
As I hurry along to the nearest bin
The blossom caught
On the short black fur of his coat

Is that what our love was to you?
A moment of beauty on a branch
That blew off in the wind and lodged
In your hair so hard that it took you
Years to get rid of it? Or was it because
You still needed help to pick up your mess
Because no one else would do it for you?

I forget to look where I’m walking
And stand on the back of his leg
And there is a short yelp and the guilt is
Just intolerable
He looks at me with his dark eyes and
Unconditional love
Maybe you were me and you couldn’t deal with the daily cries of pain
Or marking of territory
As I was covered in blossom that
The hard wind had long blown off you
