Empathetic Eyes
When faced with the worst of human interaction,
the obsession became love.
It could have become something else.
When faced with those who could so easily despise,
the obsession could have become hate
the compulsion could have become revenge.
When faced with intolerance and ridicule,
there could have been internalization, and normalization.
Against all instinct, empathy arose from the humiliation,
and suddenly suffering was confronted everywhere,
on the streets, in the shelters, in occupied countries.
Revenge could not be extracted from empathetic eyes.
The solution so far removed from the violence,
that was spilling on the streets,
as a country did what no individual
could do on their own.
