Plans

She said: “Is there more to your life?”
Is being a Marine not enough?
I wanted to be a firefighter.
I wanted to save people’s lives.
I like manning the 50cal machine gun.
I just wanted to pull the trigger.

She said: “When are you going to try?”
Excuse me love, where do you get off
filling my head with unrealistic dreams?

Regrets:
No SATs
High School GPA closer to a 1 than a 3.
Should have been a combat medic.
I just wanted to pull the trigger.

She said: “I bet you can’t finish this book”
It took me six months, but I won a free dinner.
Camp Lejeune has a library, I think.

She said: “ I think you’ll like this book.”
She incited revolution in the middle of Iraq.
I just wanted to pull the trigger.

She said: “Are you gonna leave the Marines?”
Once a Marine always a Marine.
No one officially asked me to go back to Iraq.
When we returned from the first deployment,
they split my brothers apart.

Decisions.
I watched them all redeploy, it was quiet.
I learned how to be quiet, it’s easy
when you’re alone in the barracks room.
I just wanted to pull the trigger.

She’s been long gone, it didn’t work out.
A GPA is not a prerequisite for college,
neither is an SAT score.

Doubt.
How dare you set me up to have unrealistic
dreams of becoming a doctor.
I want to save people’s lives.
I just want to pull the trigger.
Decisions, regret, doubt.
