Seventeen

You were happy,
You held the world between the palms of your hands,
The ocean tied around your neck
But it became too heavy
And you had no where to put it down.
You searched for a place inside the galaxies between your fingers,
But all you found were rotting stars.
You fell asleep with the sky dancing beneath your tongue,
You hadn’t said goodnight to your mother,
Because you were afraid if you said anything at all, the constellations would come spilling out.
So you held the world inside your mouth,
You were so gentle with its little hands
Even when it threw you down against its cold feet,
You kept it safe,
You kept it still.
You were seventeen,
Feeling your world stumbling across your childlike skin.
You were learning;
You’re always learning.
