Yikes!

I can see the scatter wrenching itself free from my throat
And skittering on the ice banks
Like a giraffe on ice skates
Running amok before me,
And oh God! something else is tumbling out
It’s scrambling to shove the syllables back in my mouth
And swallow them whole, bleeding,
Because there’s the horror in your eyes as you watch my fall
And I’ve been there gliding on the waves
With footsteps rippling harmonies
Instead of ignorance chiming clear as a bell
Incoherently

Inspired by "My Stupid Mouth" by John Mayer, probably one of my favorite songs by him. I mean, we've all had those moments where it's just like "oh, God why did I say that?" I've been on both sides of the table - the one who's caused the offense, and the one who's taken it. I always think it's so silly that John Mayer wrote such an amazing song off of an awkward moment ("Oh, I'm never speaking up again" just because he said one wrong thing!), but I'm always reminded of the sting of regret when the moment repeats itself.

Another note: I tried to make this a breathy poem, like I was talking at too quick of a pace out of shock and fear. I'd love to get feedback and to see if my method worked!
