We Will Still Be Here*

This poem was selected as a winner for Poetic Power's fall poetry contest.

Footprints lay in the sand
But they never last
As the tides roll upon the shores
And sweep them away.
But they were there…

Clouds in the sky
A blinding white amongst a sea of blue
Until the wind creeps through the skies
And carries them away.
But they were there…

A beautiful oak
Branches stretching an eternal distance
Providing shade for generations before
Branches cut away.
But they were there…

Cemeteries where the dead lay silent
Where we will all end up one day
Sent to an eternal sleep
Eventually forgotten.
But we will still be here…
