Rivers

I’ve known rivers
swift currents set free
escaping to the brine of the ocean
and on to exotic places
I’ll never be

I’ve known rivers of wind
caught and tumbling in leafy treetops
and swirling eddies moaning among
the bare branches of winter

I’ve known rivers so deep
I was afraid I’d drown in
and some I’ve wished to
I’ve known rivers
