Appetite

The human heart
is perfectly edible
delicious, in fact
if you pick out
the grit,
wipe it good
on your sleeve
a little

perhaps like the
apples of your own
garden tree–
they’re never as nice,
are they?
stale,
lonely by comparison,
to something so warm and ready

grasp it in your hand,
squeeze it a little, perhaps,
get the juices flowing–
“This isn’t your first time,
is it?”

break in gently with your teeth,
excavate a shard with your tongue,
pull on it hard,
make it come.

eat all you can
then you can throw it away,
as free as you found it–
it grows back, right?
or so you may aswell think
so long as you got yours.
