For Free

For Free

Rugged shaded edges
Carved for centuries
A thousand arms all reaching out
And we know them as trees

Water sculpted landscape
Streams to rapid waves
I’m the greatest of all artists
Carving your stone into caves

Your blanket warming covers
Are all humbled by the haze
We’re staggered by your beauty
So for hours on you we gaze

You offer more than anyone
We have so much to see
How did you get so generous?
To offer this for free
It’s all for free
It’s all for free
You offer this for free
You have so many faces
You never look the same
We try our best to keep you
Looking perfect in a frame

You come in many sizes
Are you sleeping or awake?
Some of you aren’t moving
While others starts to shake

Silence interrupted
The guards have been disturbed
When patient glowing backgrounds
Stop and wonder
What they heard

Cleanse me fresh air sooth me
Below a billion lights
Your peaceful watch of certainty
Is here again tonight

You offer more than anyone
We have so much to see
How did you get so generous?
To offer this for free
It’s all for free
It’s all for free
You offer this for free

Lee Rice

(2012)

When I wrote this I found myself feeling more and more connected
to nature and all of it's beauty.
