Freedom Woods

There is something freeing in these woods
the trees tall as skyscrapers it seems
I stand here in their midst
seeking refuge from a long day

The winter chill, to some, may be wretched
but i find it’s a sign for me
with every freezing blow
the winds carry away the problems
the stresses
the fears
with every winter comes redemption

There is no stink here
not in these woods
it’s my own personal sanctuary
no brick walls
just barriers of brush
to hide me from the world
This, yes this place, is where i feel closest to God

The wild birds here bear no judgment
rather, they sing a song while i pour myself out
to the air
holding nothing back
i stand with my arms spread wide
my eyes closed
my face pointed to the sky
I scream with the trees
and breathe deep
my lungs catch fire

oh yes, this is freedom
the only freedom you’ll find
where there’s no one to lock you away
when all you need is just to clear you head
get it all out
before it eats you alive

no one but the trees
they won’t question you here
they won’t shove pills down your throat
they’ll just give you space
and time
and just let you talk
God will put on his listening ears
you’ll swear you felt him
while you get today off your chest
these woods have his blessing
the door’s always open because there isn’t one to shut you out

and when you’re done talking
listen for a while
and the trees and the birds will whisper peace to your soul

bask in this freedom
because when the night comes
you’ll have to go back to the brick walls and locked doors
