The Oldest Fare

Just in case someone was hungry

Were I to dine on human flesh!
To taste the rare and fleeting man,
Wouldst paint mine tastebuds soon afresh
And render my needs fewer than
They were when I began.

To strip sinew and marrow from
Tendons and bones of ivory,
Oh glis’ning morsel, just a crumb
Wouldst surely be enough for me;
But offered more, I would not flee.

Man! O, man! Thy skin is rough,
Thy organs are like treasures rare,
Thine meat is thick, thine muscle tough!
But spread out for the table’s share
Wouldst be a burden I could bare.
