A coping mechanism

To J.W

You stand now in front of a rusty locked door,
One you have seen now so many dire grave times before,
But this time you know now that something has changed,
For now you see nothing - you’re all but estranged.

Coping, to you, has been all but a stranger,
You’d do anything in power to welcome the danger,
That comes alongside how you deal with the pain,
A moment of solstice - is the risk worth the gain?

You’ve given up all your keys in exchange for a blade,
Your cards are all folded, no diamonds or spades,
Or clubs or torn hearts now belong in your power,
All you own is a blade in your one final hour.

Tell me now, soldier, a blade has what point,
When you’re trapped with all duty and forced to appoint,
A task to this weapon to get through your door,
You simply cannot survive whilst relying on lore.

Practically is needed to get you inside,
You need not listen, however you must never hide,
With no option to return for the keys you once owned,
You must face your decisions and accept what you loaned.

A blade can be cheated to pick through a lock,
But judgment will draw on those fighting their clock,
Sit down now, dear soldier, and think long and hard,
Take a walk down a pier, a long boulevard.

Craft this damned blade and from the pain forge a key,
It may not be perfect but it’ll work, you will see,
It will open that door and show the path to your future,
It’s so humble and hopeful, this door is your suture.

You can make it now, I swear this to you,
Because I know that for as long as the sky shows blue,
That even with only a blade to your name,
You can meet any goals, and achieve any aim.

This poem was written by myself around the topic of suicide and self harm, and how people with mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety or even schizophrenia deal with the pain they're going through. The most common method of self harm is cutting oneself with a blade which is the symbolism of the blade in the poem, and it is supposed to show how this coping mechanism can get you through anything - being able to cope with how you feel will be your key to a better life.
