black and white photographs

black and white photographs
snapshots of a rare and happy time,
a holiday in Wales
where the beaches are pebbled,

a week away in a caravan
my parents, brother and I,
seven days watching television
all my favourite programmes in Welsh,

a severe lack of selection
their chip shops were basic and sparse,
but this was the only week
we got multi pack cereal for breakfast,

an odd eerie feel to this place
even the arcades were a sombre affair,
I bought a toy flintlock pistol
it fired caps and was the bane of the campsite,

wandering around the place alone
it became clear that I didn’t belong,
I yearned for the anguish of my life
for the noise and stench of my English town,

we packed up our belongings
and said a welcome goodbye to Cymru,
never to return
I was never really sure if happy or sad about it,
