fortress

I have walls that I’ve built up
brick by brick, heart by break,
the real me is so well guarded
I’m a difficult bad dream to take,
I’ve constructed myself a fortress
its roof tarred to keep out the rain,
a semi-permeable bio-sphere
that’s leaking love and shame,

I used to trade in knocks and deceit
but grew tired of all the inflicted hurt,
played people off against a second wind
and strode a wide and unenviable curse,
but as my bottle died on empty
my soul began to inflate and turn
and my world became a little lighter
I understood life’s just a lesson no one learns
