Sister How You Love

(To Hayley)

He can’t understand why she would choose to love a girl,
But something changed in his eyes the first time my father saw
my sister hand-in-hand with another girl.
It’s hard to imagine how anyone could bear to look at her
without a return for the love she promises to hand out
And he thinks she wrong,
Making a point to only emphasize the things that make her different.

And I guess I think she’s different to,
But I think she’s different because she’s had four best friends
and she’s stayed up till four a.m. to let them know they’re lives are worth living,
And she coaxes them out of a death they practically beg for.
She’s different because she loves like a noose with a grip too tight to escape,
And she does it so unconditionally,
She’s been focusing so hard on friends that she’s nearly forgotten to save some love for herself,
So I’ll do it for her.
despite that our birth times are sixty seconds apart she still manages to be one of my heroes.

Because she never loses sight of her future,
And never forgets her past,
God how I admire that.

Regardless of the fact that we’re twins, we don’t share much, but we share a smile,
And I’m grateful for that because hers can light up a room, our ten,
And the cocky smirk let’s you see she knows it.

The exterior is confident but the interiors a little rusted,                                                                   That girl, ticks like a clock,
And it’s gotta be maintained,
Cause if you don’t polish the pieces, it’ll break.
Has anyone noticed the seconds hand runs a bit slow?

It doesn’t make a big difference now,
because you don’t realize how many times you’ve looked towards the clock in the past sixteen years,
And you won’t notice till it’s too late, somehow...
Somehow despite the lack of recognition and regular checkups our clock still ticks,
Cause it’s job is more important than the amount of exhaustion,
from sleepless nights spent saving lives that are not yours,
And sister how you love, like it is the only thing that you know.

This is a poem I wrote for my twin sister Hayley.
