Of Earth and Stone

(1)

Against the odds and all alone,
my humble friend remains in place,
ever serene with poise and grace,
an imposing will of earth and stone.

(2)

Despite his sunken sense of self,
my humble friend consigns his needs,
he faces fate on bended knees,
and chooses duty over wealth.

(3)

To deny the night and summon light,
my humble friend repairs the dawn,
he plays the roles of king and pawn,
and removes his eyes to give us sight.

(3)

I heal his heart and calm his malice,
my humble friend has sated thirst,
he drinks the essence of the first,
the poet’s blood within his chalice.

(4)

And there upon a godly throne,
my humble friend remains in place,
ever calm with poise and grace,
an imposing will of earth and stone.
