A Hero's Unknown Journey

To read

Water.
It shimmers as it is embraced by the Earth’s open arms,
And shimmers at the thought of its long voyage.
What it has to divulge; to all it would alarm,
And it can’t wait to boast about the pilgrimage.

It cascaded down from the mountain’s edge,
And promptly travelled with effulgent oceans and seas.
It ventured and learned things to allege,
And travelled for a time with ease.

It tempted many with its knowing eyes,
And its glittering coat in the sun.
And still, after years, it’s flattered by,
The fact that we need it to carry on.

It wandered under the guise of ice crystals when it was coldest,
Falling earnestly one by one.
Mounting rapidly on the peak of the Everest,
Waiting to be taken by the sun.

It plummeted down from black masses of liquid droplets,
Journeyed on rivers towards the horizon’s gap.
Witnessed scenes of sadness and wonderment,
And travelled through pipes and then out our taps.

It now looks up at the derisive stars shining like guides,
Whilst under the impromptu arrival of the silent and attentive wind.
Its impervious coat shatters as it sighs,
Its sparkling lines thin.

“And so, I have to live through another day,
And mankind’s problems I have to see.
Their lying, cheating and killing ways,
And yet they would be nothing without me.”
