loosing my dad to alcohol addiction

I want to get a message across to those of you who drink
For I have seen the damage it causes so pour it down the sink!
Your hurting those around you, your family and your friends
It’s not to late to get the help and go and make amends
For I am about to tell a story of a girl who lost her dad
And the painful memories she wishes she never had!

The day she dread had finally arrived
The day her world stood still
She’d just been told that her dad had taken seriously ill
She left behind her children
She got a flight to Spain
The plane journey took so long
It drove her insane

The man she saw in the bed
Did not look like her dad
He looked so old and oh so frail
It made her very sad
She had so many questions
She needed to ask
How did things get so bad?
How did it happen so fast?
Her dad was in a coma
He looked so sound asleep
She prayed her dad would wake up
She prayed her dad would speak

One day her dad woke up
He was sat up in bed
She took his hand and kissed him on the head
He looked surprised to see her
To see the family there
In that moment dad knew that they all cared
She told him that she loved him
She told him that she cared
She promised she would look after him
He saw that she was scared
Tears filled his eyes as he tried to speak
He sat there silent tears rolled down his Cheek
For he knew his time had come
He wouldn’t last the week

They rushed to hospital with his cards
Dads birthday had arrived
The smile was wiped off there face
Her dad was about to die

The time had come to say goodbye
He wouldn’t make the night
Dad was tired and weak
He couldn’t put up a fight
It made her feel so powerless
So afraid and alone
She lost the man she loved so much
She was left on her own
A man she once looked up to
Was gone and wasn’t coming back
Through his own stupidity
The girl lost her dad.

So let this be a lesson to those of you who drink
It’s a selfish act
And your life is on the brink
It wont solve your problems it won’t take away your pain
It just ruins the lives of those you love they will never be the same!

(2015)

Never wrote a poem before after watching a programme about a woman who abused alcohol and suffered with chirrosis of the liver. Her stomach was swelled because her liver leaked so she had to get it drained every two weeks! This made me angry as I lost my dad to the very same thing....so that's where I got the inspiration from to write this.
