Democracy’s Victory Day: June 23rd.

Referendum Blues...

Setting: Local Pub somewhere in England
*background noise, The great debate*

‘And I believe that this Thursday could be our country’s Independence Day’
The memorable concluding words to the debate to leave or stay.
One side said too many migrants from Europe arrive at our borders
The other said there would be better control, but were they liars?
Cameron asked us to trust him, but he failed pledge after pledge
Now it hangs in the balance, will we stay or leap blindly off a ledge?
One side said we weren’t quitters, we always stay and fight,
But what about the others who just want less politics, and more rights–
For those who couldn’t secure jobs, or put food on the table?
The other said we will push for reforms, we are willing and able
Politicians threw numbers and fear at the gathered masses for months
But they failed to address those who just wanted a voice for once
Remain said we were all better together, no matter the cost
Leave insisted we could stand alone, but at what cost?
‘THE JOBS!’ Remain continued to argue were safer in a Union
Leave called bullshit, insisting we were strong enough to find new ones
They asked the people to 'take back control’ time and time again
Such an enticing prospect, the vote was swaying to leave from remain
Experts chimed in with expertise, hoping figures would set minds at ease
But fear blossomed, threatening millions would be brought to their knees
Turkey played an unwilling part, used to scare and sway the leavers
The 'IN’ said they won’t join, asking ‘why does no one believe us?’
From Juncker to Obama to Osbourne, a bleak 'Out’ picture was painted
Boris and Gove let Farage talk, then the leave’s image became tainted
‘Experts experts experts!’, But leave said 'they’ had a history of failure
Leave promised free at last we could become our own economic saviour
Sadly, An MP, Jo Cox died in the process, May God rest her soul:(
A stark reminder of just how quickly tensions and frustration can grow
Both sides shared common ground regarding the failures of Brussels
Leave insisted we could finally be free from this self-imposed muzzle
Europe felt hurt, they weren’t as bad as some made them out to be
But they misunderstood, leave voters just felt it was time to be free
27 brothers pleaded with one, 'Stay and help us fight’ they said
Some started to fall back, the attention was getting to Britain’s head
Cameron argued he had secured 'special status’, Remain cheered
Leave were skeptical, saying out meant a brighter future ahead.
And now, it comes down to the 23rd, just like that day in 1975
A day on which Britain unanimously decided to stay with pride
When the dust settles, Britain would have spoken from both sides
We will be fine, we will survive whatever change arrives.
We didn’t sit back, we didn’t wait for others to decide for us
Every faction of society merged on both sides for 'US’
What Nation can claim the exercise of Democracy as this one?
What Nation can put so much heart and soul into a fight like this one?
Great Britain never stopped being Great, and come the 24th Sun
We must set aside differences, and United, go forward as one Nation.

Tried to keep it as balanced as possible, it is the job of a writer to represent both sides of a story fairly without unnecessary bias. Even though I strongly hope we Remain in the EU, I am proud of the fact that people really do not want others to dictate their lives, but rather tried hard to fight for what they believed. Please read, share and enjoy!
