finger prints of life

some grow up
with a spot to fill
a title to live
a for runner
of things to come
someone to pass the baton to
as if holding hands
while jumping rope
you know that it’s your place to
wash the dishes or cut the turkey
or say the right thing
you know what a sister is
or a brother, of other
you know just when
to pour the gravy
over the plate
so that some splash
on the potatoes,
the filling in the turkey
has a place,
until you take it out
then it tries to cling to each other
because it lost it safe –warm place
and as you pick
the bones
while the others go home
you know it’s place
is there on the table
to be displayed
so others can learn
how to cut the pie
