Stalker

from the unfinished songbook of LOVE SONGS YOU SHOULD SING TO ME

I see them walking by the shore
Holding hands, like they belong
I’ve seen them laughing, stealing secrets
But they can’t see me anymore.

I see them sharing heart-shaped candies
And sweet nothings, forget-me-nots;
Scurrying into dark apartments
And smiling to what daylight brought.

And I will watch you from dark corners
I will call your name aloud
I will hint we make it formal
And shower you with things I’ve bought.

And I will ask you out to dinner
To some fancy place downtown
Where you can tell me about your feelings
But when I do, you’ll turn me down.

I was there on the day you met him
In fact I led him to your spot
I told you what you should say to him
And hinted what he would respond.

I stood by you there at your wedding
I even walked you down the aisle
And when the church bells had all faded
I still held you in my arms.

And I will seek you among the flowers
And shelter you from summer storms
I’ll keep you dry through autumn showers
And in the winter, keep you warm.

And I will watch you with your children
I will be there when you are old
And I will hold your hand forever
Because you see, dear, I am love.
