Too Far From Home

Too Far from Home

I once had awakened to find myself a-drifting,
A-drifting; O, I found myself a-drifting,
drifting all alone!
I now have awakened, as once I was sleeping,
O’ I was sleeping, but from that darkness keeping,
I wandered too far from home!

I suppose while I was deeply sleeping, sleeping,
I suppose while I was sleeping,
My soul began to roam,
But now I have awakened, to see myself forsaken,
For when I was silently sleeping,
O’ I wandered too far from home!

Once I fell into the darkness that I was keeping,
For I was merely sleeping, sleeping,
And I was merely sleeping, sleeping for to roam,
But then I began dreaming, dreaming, dreaming,
O’ and as I was forever dreaming,
I then drifted too far from home!

I had not measured the vast distances so travelled,
When I was sleeping; O’ a-sleep and dreaming!
Then drifting all alone,
And I ne’er saw my soul a-drifting, and drifting,
I ne’er knew my soul was drifting,
Until I drifted too far from home!

Alas! Now there is no returning, no returning,
O’ I fear there is no returning!
For I am abandoned and alone,
But when I was sleeping, fast asleep, and dreaming,
I did not realize that I was drifting,
Drifting too far from home!
