Art

We’re damned if we do
we’re damned if we don’t
They talk of our generation
as if we are children
who can’t understand reasoning,
who have no reason to go on breathing.
Maybe they are right,
maybe we really do not have any reason
to continue on living,
except to prove them wrong.
What’s the point of going to school,
when there is no guarantee of a job?
What’s the point of going to school for what we want,
like for instance creative writing or art
when there definitely is not any hope of anyone hiring for that?
It’s not like anyone needs art right?
I mean an artist is a degrading title now anyways,
not anything like doctor, lawyer, or athlete.
But what is so different from us and them?
A lawyer is just an artist at arguing,
an athlete an artist at their sport.
They don’t understand that the feeling of making a three
and the feeling of creating a poem is basically the same.
And who has the money to become a doctor now anyways?
And besides it’s not as if people actually want art right?
They’re not going to any galleries, buying paintings or sculptures.
But that’s just it, people are so ignorant,
they don’t even understand what art is.
They don’t understand that their news is art,
cold hard truth mixed in with pretty lies.
Or that the magazines and books they read is art,
the movies they see, the plays they watch.
The concerts they go to, the music they listen to,
what is music, but poetry mixed with music?
That the label on their food is art,
their billboards, the road signs,
all created to be the most productively understood.
They don’t understand how art can be productive.
They just understand that art is liberal.
Liberal, that explosive word used as an expletive.
They associate liberal arts with the political point of view.
They don’t even bother to look it up.
They don’t understand that these “liberal arts” was once considered
essential knowledge for a citizen to learn to be part of society.
But let’s not dare correct them,
because they’ll just argue until they’re red in the face.
Like pharisees arguing about God to Jesus,
but sorry, I’ve already made this political,
for Heaven’s sake I can’t make this religious too.
So let them think what they want to think,
and while we’ll be creating art,
they’ll just be stuck arguing about it.
