Rewards and Pain

I think its yesterday, and time plays a trick on me again
When in the mirror I look to see myself dressed in black
How can this be so? When yesterday was Spain
My mind tells me so again and again
So look through the darkness and find a way back

Back to those times when in sunshine we played
To those long summer days when we were unafraid
The rewards of life were all in their place
We were all engaged in that longest race

But along the path many doors were shut
Only their keys would open them up
And much pain was endured in the search
And for many only found in the church

Questions were asked about our conduct in life
And whether or not we had broken the rules
What rules were they? we all would say
But for the questioner this would not suffice

Stranded then on the highest of hills
Overlooking the land and the result of our spills
Only then could we see the action of our folly
Broken promises under the tree of holly

The pain was astute and realisation acute
Wrong things were done beneath this sun
Our chances were equal but we all came undone
But at last the key was found, just lying on the ground

This is the key that many cant find
It opens the world and takes away pain
A reward to those who stay at the helm
For 'Love’ really is the key to the realm…..

(2011)

Note: I suppose these lines are a bit like Pilgrims journey, except they are from a different viewpoint, a retrospective if you like, a looking backwards at lessons learnt, that Love really is the key.
