The Hold

’Twas the time of the morning dew
Afore the sky flashed its pastel blue
And the bloodstained meadow knolls
Shone their battle scars among the coals.
From yesterday’s skirmish with more to come
The worst of all hast yet begun.

“Hold down the fort ye men of honor.
Show thy foe you can go on longer.
Fight until ye can’t fight no more,
‘Til your lifeless body lies on the floor.
You died honoring all soldier’s creeds,
Gone to your heaven where gallantry leads.”

This poem was for "The Belt and Beyond" magazine for the Memorial Day issue.
