The Lovers

The lovers walk on hand in hand,
Their fingers intertwined.
Not a care in the world have they,
Whilst love looks on behind.
They cross the bridge that summer evening
Never looking back,
Blissful in their sweet romance,
Whilst the heart begins to crack.

Sunlight dances on the water;
Sparkling ripples play.
They pull each other close to kiss,
Whilst love must hide away.
Her laughter fills the summer air,
His hands about her waist;
They walk into the distance,
Whilst love must be erased.

The lovers walk now hand in hand,
Their fingers interlaced.
A foreign wind is biting,
Whilst love has been misplaced.
He holds her tight to keep her warm,
But someone else is there.
The low sun casts a perfect shadow,
Whilst love is here nowhere.

Loving shadows mask empty hearts;
Icy water swells below.
He wants to buy her flowers,
Whilst love left long ago.
His laughter quavers in the wind,
As they embrace each other,
Together standing on the bridge,
Whilst love crosses another.

The lovers walk home hand in hand,
Their fingers clasping tight.
Not a care in the world have they,
Whilst love is hidden by night.
They cross the road that fateful hour
Though in the cold they shake.
Blissful in their ignorance,
Whilst the heart springs up awake.

A cool breeze tousles the water;
Sparkling stars look on.
They pull each other close to kiss,
Whilst love is still not gone!
Their laughter fills the autumn air,
His hand about her breast.
But in the dawn he will be gone,
Whilst love stays unconfessed.

(2014)

Three different bridges in my life, three different moments of realisation. The three situations might all have looked sweet to an onlooker, but each time there were things that should have been said and weren't.
