Were I someday to catch a rainbow bright,
And weave its colours just like they were thread,
Then yours 'twould be to gaze on, day and night;
This tapestry beneath your feet I’d spread.
Or else, could I but steal a silver star,
I’d climb to heav’n to bring it back for you.
More bright than diamonds it would be by far;
You’d be the envy of more than a few!
But I confess I have no net so wide
To capture heaven’s ornaments so fair;
Nor can I anything so grand provide,
But all I have I’d give to you to share.
Now I can offer you my heart alone;
Play gently with this toy: 'tis all I own.
