From the Foredeck

Life, my love
Is as fragile as a dream.
Whether it be known to us
or not, we have
the potential to effect
great and profound change,
in the palms of our hands.

The power for right,
the good sense of truth
and faithfulness,
and the means to achieving
everything of which we can dream,
by way of aligning
our course with the stars.

We may choose to live,
should we wish,
at one with that stellar vastness,
subject to the whims
of tides and oceans,
but a skilled navigator
and soul surfer
will pay no heed
to old maps and charts,
long obsolete and irrelevant.

They will plot their journey
as they see it necessary
to explore most deftly,
the unchartered seas
and pirate laden waters
like an invisible spectre
of elegant seamanship,
seen for the first time
dropping over the crest
of an ascending wave
against the rising moon,
toward a far-off bounty.

Cast me off my love
into that great abyss
to cut and cruise the water
many leagues above
those perils and behemoths of
courageous perception
and call my name
from that distant shore
into the swirling chaos
of the darkest ocean night
until I see that glow
burning hard in the ice-laden ether
of quiet calm and sure promise.

Let me sling
thy lantern bright
from the moonraker’s height;
that guiding spirit
of universal law
that would clear a passage wide
through straits where noble men brave
hath lost their souls
in a mire of confusion and regret
till I see again
the expanse
of that new horizon
beckoning,
be it here or there.
